Hi DeviantArt people,
I'm primarily a beekeeper. I make my own woodware (bee boxes, frames, etc) and spend most of my day covered in either bees or sawdust. My art on DeviantArt is unrelated to my profession.
My art has always been for myself and my very close friends - I've played D&D and other roleplaying games since the late 80s. I've always enjoyed making characters and maps for the various games I'm in.
I don't do commissions or take requests. This isn't because I don't like the idea of being paid for my work (far from it). It's because I don't have the time to split myself between my passion for beekeeping and woodworking, and my 'other' art. If I took a commission or an art job I'd really want to do the job right, and that would mean taking time away from the thing that puts food on my table. While I deeply appreciate the requests (I'm flattered, really) I just don't have the time.
Also, most of my art, with the possible exception of some of my maps, is un-sellable. Why? Because the base pictures I use are other people's art, not my own. Sometimes I use base art from well-known artists who make their money from being artists, and I can't sell something I don't own. I have huge respect for people who can make this stuff from scratch - in another life I might have gone down that path, and my daughter is leaning that way already - but I can't sell a collage of famous artists no matter how much I tweak colors and stretch meshes. For a character sheet in a D&D game it's one thing; for my own personal gain? That's something else entirely.
